Because of stringent controls over female modesty, the idea goes, it was inappropriate for women to get undressed in front of men. Now, this is both right and wrong. As a matter of fact, one of the handful of extant renaissance drawings after the female nude is by Michelangelo to the left, now in the Louvre.

Thomas Kren October 9, 8 min read. Images of the naked human body provoke conflicting feelings: shame, admiration, curiosity, desire, disgust, anger. This is especially true when these images appear in public spaces, whether physical or virtual.
The Italian Renaissance Nude investigates the nude as a means of asserting the superiority of men to women and of naturalising power differentials by entrenching them in a fixed set of ideas about the body and its representation. In the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapestthere is a drawing by Raphael of a woman, completely naked aside from her hair wrap. Looking slightly down, she covers her breasts and genitalia with her hands in a pose that mimics that of the famous classical sculptural type the Venus Pudica. It seems unlikely though, given the hair covering and the plump softness of the body here that this is after a sculpture.

This idea formed the basis for Italian Renaissance art theory, which posited painting and sculpture as primarily mental activities, rather than manual ones.
